Come “Sing and Dance” with MPBB!

This concert will feature cornet soloist, Laura Shea-Clark, performing Dvorak’s beautiful aria Song to the Moon from the opera Rusalka. We’ll also be playing Elgar’s Chanson de Matin (Song of the Morning), and Italian Fantasy, a medley of well known Italian songs including Funiculi Funicula, and the Triumphal March from Aida.

Toe-tappers to dance to include The Fair-Day from An Irish Symphony, Viva Birkinshaw March and Malcolm Arnolds, Prelude, Dance, and March and if that weren’t enough, we’ll also play John Williams’ Liberty Fanfare and The Mask of Zorro.

Meet our May concert soloist, Laura Shea-Clark!

LauraPromoPicture20150329A native of Chicago, Laura grew up playing in Salvation Army brass bands and played with the Illinois and Chicago Brass Bands, which between them won seven North American Brass Band Association Championship titles. She also won the NABBA solo competition with “Song to the Moon”, our featured solo piece for this concert.

In addition to freelancing and subbing in various groups, she performs with the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, Palo Alto Philharmonic, Saratoga Symphony, and Lyric Theatre, and she is section leader for the San Francisco Wind Ensemble. She and her husband, Guy, both play trumpet for the Santa Cruz Nutcracker Ballet and sub in the Santa Cruz Symphony.

Our Spring Concert Will Be Out of This World!

The concert opens with Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s Enter the Galaxies and also includes John Williams’ film music for Superman and Cowboy’s Overture. You’ll also hear a fantastic arrangement of Queens’ classic rock song Bohemian Rhapsody Herb Alpert favorite, Zorba’s Dance,, and cornet trio, Three Jolly Sailormen with Ken Walter, Dave Adams, and Laura Shea-Clark on cornet. The major work on the program is Labour and Love by Percy Fletcher, a brass band classic which musically depicts man’s struggle to find meaning in his work.

Our featured soloist for the concert is Cliff Mercer, playing Chuck Mangione’s Children of Sanchez on flugelhorn. In addition to playing with MPBB and freelancing, Cliff is principal trumpet in the Ohlone Community Band and assistant principal trumpet in the Ohlone Wind Orchestra.

You’re invited to enjoy an afternoon of holiday music with performances by the Ohlone Community Band, Ohlone Wind Orchestra, Mission Peak Brass Band, and the Ohlone Tuba Ensemble!

The brass band will be performing Do They Know It’s Christmas? to mark the 30th anniversary of the first Band Aid project, when the song was written in response to famine in Ethiopia. A remake of the song will be out in November to raise funds to combat Ebola. Come join us to hear this and other fun holiday tunes!

Fall Concert and Season Announced

Our opening concert will be on Friday, November 7th at 8PM and will include Franz Listz’s Les Preludes, Michael Ball’s Cambrian Suite, and John Williams’ Summon the Heroes.

Lighter works include The Lion King, Barnard Castle, and Kings of Brass March. Featured soloists will be Gary Crandall, performing Somewhere Over the Rainbow on tenor horn, as well as John Monroe and Brian Taylor, playing the euphonium duet, Deep Inside the Sacred Temple.

The season continues with concerts on Saturday, December 6th at 2PM, Friday, March 20th at 8PM, and Friday, May 1st at 8PM. Performances take place in the Smith Center, Ohlone College, in Fremont. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors, youth under 12, and Ohlone students and staff, plus $2 Ohlone College parking fee per vehicle. Mission Peak Brass Band Goes to the Movies!

Our final concert of the season, Friday, May 9th, at 8:00 p.m., features popular movie music, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Soundtrack from Brave, and John Williams’ Midway March. Also on the program will be Variations on Laudate Dominum, Malvern Suite, and Tijuana Taxi.

Our soloist for the concert will be Ken Walters playing the classic cornet solo, Clear Skies by Eric Ball. Ken is co-principal of MPBB, principal trumpet in the Ohlone Wind Orchestra, and is a member of the quintet, Oxford Brass.

Take a trip around the world with us in March!

We start our journey with John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme and a lively cornet quartet, Sandman, followed by Phillip Sparke’s Music for a Festival. Then we start our tour of the world with Amparito Roca, Four Cities Symphony (London, Paris, Rome, & Moscow), Famous British Marches, and Armenian Dances. We hope to see you on Friday, March 7th at 8:00 p.m. in the Smith Center of Ohlone College for this wonderful concert!

Rob Lenicheck, soprano cornet, will be the featured soloist with the Mission Peak Brass Band, playing O Holy Night. The concert is perfect for the whole family.

New Season Announced!

civil_war We are really excited about our upcoming season, beginning with our opening concert Friday, November 15th. The program includes Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, a rousing arrangement of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, Kurt Weill’s Mack the Knife, Wild West: The Best of Ennio Morricone, and in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Bilik’s American Civil War Fantasy. Featured soloists for the opening concert are John Monroe, Euphonium, playing Carrickfergus and Ken Walter, Cornet, playing Gabriel’s Oboe.

Lydia Busler-Blais, Improvisatory Horn Soloist

LydiaThe Mission Peak Brass Band features renowned French horn soloist, Lydia Busler-Blais, on the final concert of our season on May 10th at 8pm in the Smith Center of Ohlone College in Fremont. She will be performing Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust and her own improvisations. Other works include Berne Patrol, Van Der Roost’s Toccata Festiva, as well as English Country Scenes, Ruby Tuesday, Blueberry Hill, The Girl From Ipanema, and Adagio from Spartacus.

Lydia has performed with many orchestras and dance companies as a prominent soloist and improvisationalist. She received awards from the Consortium of Vermont Composers, the International Horn Society Meir Rimon Fund, and by the Massachusetts Arts Council.
